About the book
‘Supertunnel – Journey from Light to Light,’ celebrates the complexity of building the 57.5 meter dual-deck tunnel, traveling for two miles beneath Seattle.
‘Supertunnel’ is a thorough account of all that went into the underground highway, covering a five-year period in thirty separate chapters. Rather than a fast read, the book is the type that will linger on the living room table for readers to continue viewing over time.
This book is a detailed retrospective, at three pounds and 190 pages, providing renderings and images beyond areas available to local news media, such as workers assembling the curved concrete walls, or diving in a compressed air environment, and piloting the machine in the control center.

"The pages of this book are the image memory of Seattle’s 99 Tunnel as an undertaking. These pictures contrast starkly with those of yesteryear of sweaty men working on a dark tunnel face with picks, shovels, or pneumatic drills. In all, it is a beautiful and powerful witness to the story, photographed with care and skill."
— Reiner Decher, Professor Emeritus, Aeronautics & Astronautics, Adjunct Professor, Civil Engineering, University of Washington
“Catherine’s book is a grand documentation of all that has been accomplished. This book celebrates the TBM Bertha, the tunnel that Bertha excavated, and the highway that was built inside that tunnel.”
— Gregory Hauser, Deputy Project Manager, Seattle Tunnel Partners
"Seattle is re-imagining itself. This book is a look backstage. The boring of the tunnel was one of the initial acts in this great dance piece. The stage crew who designed and built the tunnel brought extraordinary imagination and dedication to this monumental project. Catherine Bassetti’s photography elegantly documents this opening act."
